Mounting instruction for the Friction drive Bicycle and Trike Kits to PRINT off

Note:  This is NOT something you add to the shopping cart.  Do not add to your cart as it will add shipping cost to your order.

Please print this off before the kit arrives so you will have it ready.

You may also want to print off any pictures you think you might need to install.  Look at kits even with different brand and sizes of engines as you see the kits mounted on many styles and tire size of bikes.

Read the instruction first (2 or 3 times in full) and look at the pictures on the web site before starting to mount the kit.

Mounting instruction for the Friction drive Bicycle/Trike Kits, model FDR (Friction Drive Rear) & FDF (Friction Drive Front).  Check out our web site before you start mounting the bike kit if available. 

Look at the pictures of several bikes and see the many different options of using the mounting brackets.

Do not allow the bike fall over.  The starter and or engine may be damaged.

The China made Mitsubishi 42.7 cc clone two cycle engine requiers a 25 to 1 mix ratio.  5.20 oz of two cycle oil to one gallon of unleaded gas - No Ethanol is best.

Use High quality Air Cooled two cycle oil to one gallon of unleaded gas.

Higher octane unleaded gas works best.

Subaru / Robin Micro Four Stroke:  Read and follow the engine manual. 

You must add SAE 10W-30 oil to the engine before starting.

Honda GXH50  You must add SAE 10W-30 oil to the engine before starting, see engine manual.
Honda GX50     You must add SAE 10W-30 oil to the engine before starting, see engine manual.
Honda GX35     You must add SAE 10W-30 oil to the engine before starting, see engine manual.
HondaGX25      You must add SAE 10W-30 oil to the engine before starting, see engine manual.

EH035 33.5 cc add 3.33 oz add SAE 10W-30 oil to the engine before starting, see engine manual.

EH025 24.5 cc add 2.68 oz.  add SAE 10W-30 oil to the engine before starting, see engine manual.

The on / off switch is mounted on the EHO25 engine. No remote switch is included. 

You may need to "level" the engine in order to check the oil level correctly. 

Do not over fill Four Cycle Engines with oil or they can build head pressure and damaged the engine.

Huasheng 140FA 37.7 cc & 142F 49cc Four Cycle, Honda GX22, GX25, GX31, GX35 or GX50. Read and follow the manual.

Push Button Stop – Kill Switch:

Cut off the female spade connector off the end of the wire and add the Bullet male connector that is the bag.

Remote Toggle Stop - Kill Switch: 

Do not move the toggle back and forth until it’s mounted on the 7/8” handle bar.  If you do before it’s mounted you could damage the switch.  Strip 3/8” of the rubber coating off the end of the wire, then crimp the connector on the wire, run the wire along your throttle cable.  Make sure your handle bars can turn full left and full right and back to the engine plus about 4” extra.  You may want to cut off any wire that is not needed.  Then crimp the other connector on the wire.  Test to make sure you have a good connection before riding and that the stop switch stops the engine. The 2nd wire (if the engine has two) is a ground, but usually is not needed to stop the engine. Some bikes may require that you run a ground wire from the engine to the kill switch mount. 

To stop the engine you can pull the spark plug wire or lift the "chock" lever and the engine will die. 

If your stop switch is not working, its best that you do not ride until the switch is replaced.

Rear mounting: 

You may need to remove the rear fender or cut a space out so the drive roller will engage the tire without making contact with the fender. 

 Dual Engaging Rods Only: 

See pictures on our web site:  Once the “U” bracket is mounted to the frame and the Black channel is mounted.   If you received the Dual engaging rods use the 5m x .80 x 20 mm long Hex bolts included.  Start the 5mm bolt from the “Inside” of the frame when possible.  This will give you more clearance room on the right side of the frame so the Freewheel or cassette sprockets do not contact the head of the bolt or nut.  Use the Nylock nut to hold in place.   Don’t count on just the threads to hold the bolt in place - in your bike frame.  You may also need to use the flat washer depending on your style and frame thickness.  The two black Alum. Supports have two holes drilled at one end and a slot in the other.  The dual holes mounts by your axle, the slot goes up right by the Black Channel. 

Pick the best position in the black channel that fits your bike.  Make sure you have enough room to raise and lower the drive roller.  In some cases, depending on the wheel size, you may need to drill another 5 mm hole and/or cut the two Alum support rods.  Make sure you think about what you are doing and how it will affect how the rods and if they will function correctly before you cut or drill them. 

Starting from Right to left, place the Skewer into the slot on the right side of the bike, then add one of the 5/8” Black Alum. spacers, then into the right side of the channel, then place the 3.5” wide spacer in the middle of the channel, this keeps the channel form compressing, then place the other 5/8” wide spacer, then go into the slot on the left support, then thread on the metal Skewer nut.

Attach the "U" shaped bracket above the wheel.  You may be able to use the center brake hole, if the bolt is long enough, if not mount the bracket above the brake. 

Use the 1/4-20 x 1-3/4" bolts to attach the backer plate to the "U" bracket.  DO NOT over tighten the bolts or you may bend your frame. 

Some customers will place a small piece of rubber under the mounting brackets.  You can also use Black Electrical tape or an inner tube.

An old inner tube works great for this.  Check to make sure it is tight enough and still positioned correctly after your test ride.  Center the drive roller over the center of the tire, or where most of the “knurled” surface is in contact with the smooth tread tire, than tighten the two "keeps" nuts against the black Aluminum mount to keep in alignment. 

Tighten the outside 3/8-16 nylon nuts so it is even with the end of the carriage bolt.  You may need to have someone squeeze the “U” bracket together so you can place the 3/8-16 nylon nut on the carriage bolt, or use a clamp.

Front mounting:  Attach the 6-hole bracket to the end of the Aluminum Supports if needed.  These will help in the mounting of the supports to of the axle or drilled & tapped holes on the front of the trike or bike.  Some axles are 5/16", 3/8" or 10mm.   So you may have to drill out one of the hole to fit your axle.  You may want to use a lock washer, "double nut", or use lock tight to keep the axle nut from coming off.  Most front fender can stay on as long as the drive roller does not contact the fender. 

Some front forks may require longer bolts that are not included.

Run the throttle cable and the remote stop - kill switch wire along the frame up to the handle bars to the right or left side.  Install the throttle lever with hose clamp or twist grip first, then the remote stop – kill switch close to the throttle.  This way you can "stop" the engine without moving your hand if needed. 

Use the nylon ties to hold the cable in place, but do not tighten the nylon ties against the cable & wire too tight, leave enough play so the cable will not bind. 

Make sure you do not have any sharp or tight bends in the cable.  Keep turns wide turns so the cable does not bind or hang up.

Be sure and turn the wheel full left and full right and make sure the throttle cable & wire does not bind.  Test with the engine not running and make sure the throttle returns to the idle position.  

Most kick stands will not hold the bike up right. 

We do sell dual kick stands that work better than standard kick stands.  Use the Search and type in "kick stand ".

Install the tension rod as shown in the pictures.  When the drive roller is not engaged, the slot will be in the higher position, when engaged; it will be in the lower position.  Make sure the drive roller does not slip on the smooth tread tire or it will wear it.  You can place the engaging rod in many positions, use the best position that your bike requires.  An extra engaging rod can be added to the right side if needed or wanted.

Starting the engine:

After you have mixed the gas and 2-cycle oil in a gas can, fill the tank, then press the primer bulb several times until you see the fuel go in the clear line.  Make sure the drive roller is OFF the tire and in the up postition.

Lift the chock lever and make sure the stop switch is in the "ON" position.  Set the starter rope.  Pull out until you feel the starter paws have locked.  Then pull the starter rope (short fast pulls) while supporting the engine. 
Make sure your hand is not in contact with the drive roller or any hot places on the engine with the Drive roller OFF the tire and in the UP postition. 

Short fast pulls work best.  Do not over pull or pull too hard as you may damage the starter.  

After the engine starts, let it warm up for about 5 to 10 seconds, than lower the chock lever down.

Read this section real close.  You must use a "smooth tread, street style or slick" type tire tread with all friction drive units. This will allow for a better contact point for the drive roller to contact the tire. Check air pressure in the tires, do not over fill, use the amount stated on the tire.  Then apply enough pressure to the tire so the drive roller does not slip when given full throttle. 

A 1/8” to 3/16” depression is about what you will need depending on the size of drive roller, engine size and style of tire.  If the drive roller slips, adjust more pressure by lowering the drive roller deeper to the tire.  If you do not have enough pressure on the drive roller, it will slip and wear the tire and /or drive roller.   If you have too much pressure on the tire the engine will not perform very well.  Most customers will be able to adjust the pressure the first time after they have used the system just a few times.  Having the correct pressure and style of tire is most important when using a friction drive kit. 

 Tires with Kevlar work great.  Some customers claim up to 1,500+ miles on one tire.  We sell several great tires for use with the Friction Drive kits on our web site.

Most of these engines will gain about 27% more power after you have used 4 to 6 full tanks of gas and/or gas/mix. 

NOTE:  There may be a "Clutch Noise" when the clutch rotor engages the clutch drum.  As you increase your speed the noise will stop. 
The clutch engaging noise is normal.  It’s best when starting out that you pedal the bike 3-5 turns to help get moving.  

Also, if you pedal a few turns when taking off your clutch rotor will last a lot longer.  The larger the drive roller you have the longer the “clutch noise” will sound.  If you pedal the bike when you take off it will increase the life of the clutch shoes as they will not be slipping as much and will lock in to the clutch drum much faster.

Ride at your own risk.  Ride at a slow safe speed and obey all local city and state laws.  Always wear ridding and safety gear.  A bright colored flag will help others see you.  A speedometer, light and reflectors are a good addition to your bike.  Make sure you have good front & rear brakes.  In most states & cities there is no age limit, tag, license or insurance required on Motorized bikes and trikes.  Be sure and check your local city & state laws for complete details.

Ride at your own risk.  Watch out for the other drivers. 

Auto traffic may not see you and pull out in front of you. 

Be sure and Lock your bike and engine kit up so no one can steel it.  Don’t allow others to ride it.

We also offer different sizes of drive rollers for the engines.

Smaller drive rollers have more pulling power less top speed. Larger drive rollers have a faster top speed but less low end pulling power.  It also depends on the weight of the rider, engine size and power and riding conditions – road condition.

Drive roller stock sizes:  .930", 1",  1-1/8” or 1.34”.
